Sam

Asher’s face turns pale, his tawny eyes wide and—for the first time since I met the male—filled with terror. I’ve never seen him like this, have never seen any of the males like this, not even in the middle of combat. Asher, who commanded fleets, who holds an entire Academy of delinquent immortals under rein, seems to have finally met the one foe who brings him to his knees.

A nine-year-old boy.

The door behind Jake slams closed, and Asher flinches as if struck. For a moment, he keeps standing there, his hands opening and closing at his sides. Then he turns to me, his heart pounding so hard that I can see each beat twitch against the sensitive skin on his neck.

“Samantha,” he whispers. “Help me. Please. Help Jake.”

My chest tightens at the desperation in the male’s voice. Never in my life had I imagined I would ever hear Asher plead with me. Never would have thought how much I don’t like seeing him like this.

I turn to Cassis. “Jake needs a bit of breathing room. Do you have someone who can dog him for a bit and make sure he isn’t hurt?”

Cassis waves his phone. “Already done. The last thing I need is for the urchin to be offering his services to the competition, don’t you think?”

“His services?” Asher asks.

Cassis hooks a chair with his foot and kicks it toward Asher. “You don’t want to know right now,” he says, signaling the waitress for drinks. “But I would love to be there when you have that conversation. Your cub seems to share both your wonderful personality and my opinion of you, by the way.” Cassis’s phone pings. “My males have him in sight. How long do you want them to let him run, Sam?”

“So long as it’s safe, until he is ready to stop.” I sit at the small table beside us, Asher mirroring my movements. “Jake’s emotions are all over the place right now,” I tell the male. “It will take time. If we can avoid having you corner him like prey, things will go smoother.”

My throat aches as I try not to think about all those years that made me such an expert on small, frightened, abused children.

“I don’t understand,” Asher whispers, his gaze shifting between the door and Cassis’s phone, that now shows a shared location of the pursuing vamp team. “How is it possible that I have a son?”

“Ask Ellis. I’m sure he’d be more than happy to explain to you how pups are made,” Cassis said, his voice edged with a vindictive satisfaction that fades before his next sentence. “Or, given the conversations we’ve had with Jake so far, the boy may be able to fill you in as well.” He smiles at his phone. “And he’s right back to Dusk, by the way. Out in back.”

I grip Asher’s forearm, the muscles beneath my fingers coiled tightly. “Shift into wolf form before going out there. It will be easier if he doesn’t have to talk to you.
